    Porcelain Veneers or Braces?

    Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers vs. braces? Do you know the difference between the two? Did you know that veneers can be an option to consider instead of braces?  Depending on your individual needs and goals, each approach offers you different things.

Often referred to as instant orthodontics,  porcelain veneers offer you a straight, beautiful smile in less time than traditional orthodontic treatment.  Veneers are custom-made to hug your teeth with the natural color, look and feel of natural teeth.  But unlike natural teeth, the porcelain veneer material prevents staining.

Porcelain veneers compare in  strength and durability to natural tooth enamel providing you the results you need and desire.  A smile consultation with one of our Evanson DDS Parker, Colorado, team members can help you determine if porcelain veneers are for you.  Read on to learn more about what this advanced cosmetic technology can offer you!

The Difference Between Structural and Cosmetic Dentistry

To understand what veneers and braces offer, it is important to understand two common dental categories: structural and cosmetic. Braces are part of the structural category. They are relied upon to treat and repair structural teeth problems like overbites, under bites, open bites, cross bites, overt gaps, and overcrowding.

Porcelain veneers are tasked with more cosmetic needs such as repairing teeth that are stained, discolored, chipped, or that have slight gaps between them.

Malocclusion and the Need for Braces

74 percent of American adults are affected by malocclusion, an advanced term for crooked or misaligned teeth. While some may assume that crooked teeth are just a cosmetic (visual) issue, this is an incorrect assumption. Crooked teeth can put unnatural stress and pressure on the teeth and jaws resulting in premature wear, chips, cracks, and periodontal disease.

Untreated stress and tension can also cause jaw, ear, and neck pain along with receding gums, loose teeth, and ultimately tooth loss. Good periodontal health is at risk with crooked teeth. Loosely spaced teeth allow plaque and bacteria to form in between them. This bacteria will accumulate overtime and can even travel into your bloodstream through the compromised gum line, affecting your overall health.

    Should You Consider Porcelain Veneers?

To answer this question, Dr. Evanson will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth to determine if you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. If you are in need of some minor adjustments to the anterior teeth, this can be corrected with porcelain veneers. More advanced misalignment will require the orthodontic treatment with Invisalign or braces.  Porcelain veneers are recommended if your teeth are cracked, discolored, or have slight gaps.  Our experienced team at Evanson DDS can help you decide what’s best for you.

    Technology for Your Custom-Look

To create your natural-looking veneers, we use advanced computer imaging to analyze your smile and create “diagnostic mock-ups” showing what your smile would look like with porcelain veneers. Veneers that complement your face will give you the natural, attractive results you desire.  During the consultation phase, we will use smile analysis, computer imaging, and digital x-rays and impressions of your teeth and gums to create a product specifically designed for you.

What to Expect with Porcelain Veneers

Worried about maintaining your beautiful smile after porcelain veneers? The good news is, porcelain veneers are easy to take care of.  They require the same care as your natural teeth with daily brushing, flossing and good oral hygiene habits. Non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste will help retain the brilliance of your porcelain veneers over the years.

When needed, we can polish your veneers with a specially formulated, non-abrasive compound to keep them looking their best.  During your regular appointments, Dr. Evanson will inspect your veneers to make sure they continue to function for you like you want.
