New Year’s Resolutions for a Beautiful Smile

happy girl groupThe new year is all about starting fresh and making commitments to improve yourself and your health. Perhaps one place you should focus on this year is your smile. Evanson DDS recommends the following new year’s resolutions to make your smile more beautiful in 2018.

Improve Your Brushing and Flossing Habits

One of the best ways to ensure a beautiful smile is to make daily brushing and flossing a priority. First, choose a toothbrush with soft bristles and apply a small strip of fluoride toothpaste. Hold the handle at a 45-degree angle against your teeth and move the brush in small circular motions to help remove particles from under the gum line. Spend 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth for a total of two minutes of brushing. Brush at least twice a day.

Also, remember to floss so you can remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth where the brush can’t reach. Guide a piece of dental floss between each tooth and behind your third molars. Floss at least once a day. Dr. Evanson recommends flossing at night after you brush your teeth and before you go to bed.

Make Healthier Food and Drink Choices

Everything you eat and drink touches your teeth as it passes through your mouth. By watching what types of foods and beverages you consume, you can help achieve your new year’s resolution of having a beautiful smile in 2018. Some drinks and snacks you should avoid include:

    • Sticky and hard candy
    • Refined carbohydrates
    • Pickles
    • Soda
    • Dark-colored drinks, including tea, coffee, and red wine
    • Acidic fruit juice and sports drinks

If you indulge in these foods and beverages, chew xylitol gum or brush your teeth shortly after to help remove food particles and neutralize acids that cause cavities and staining.

    Quit Smoking

Any form of tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco, is detrimental to your oral health. There’s no better time than the new year to set a goal to quit your tobacco use. You can find tools online, join a smoking cessation group, and seek support from friends and family to help you with your new year’s resolutions.

Complete the Dental Treatment You’ve Been Putting Off

It’s easy to postpone cosmetic dental treatment, but if your goal is to smile with confidence this year, now is the time to get it done.

If you’re tired of covering your mouth to hide your crooked teeth, 2018 might be the year to get braces. You have several discrete choices for straightening your smile as an adult, including ceramic braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign. Be sure to continue visiting your dentist during orthodontic treatment to prevent oral health problems.

The new year is also a good time to start fresh with professional teeth whitening. At Evanson DDS, we offer in-office whitening for fast, dramatic results as well as at-home whitening kits that provide a gradual lightening effect.

Visit Dr. Evanson for a Routine Check-Up

While the default interval to see a dentist is once every six months, the American Dental Association recommends working closely with a dentist to determine the frequency of care you require for your situation. Low-risk patients may only need to visit once a year, while patients battling periodontal disease or other issues may require visits as often as every three months.

When you visit Dr. Evanson for a routine cleaning and inspection, we’ll also address any cavities, oral diseases, or cancer risks we find. We can answer your questions and provide personalized advice for your situation.
