Thank Your Dental Hygienist This Week

Thank Your Dental Hygienist This Week

It’s National Dental Hygienist Week, April 4 – April 10. Now is the time to find a way to thank your dental hygienists at the office of Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS. Dental hygienists are an important part of every dental team, performing valuable work both for the internal team and for you as a patient! Dr. Evanson is more effective as your dentist when she is surrounded by a qualified team of dental hygienists; your experience wouldn’t be the same without them.

Take Time to Thank Your Dental Hygienist

Dental hygienists are the support system of a successful dentist’s office and an integral part of any dental team. Dr. Evanson would be the first to tell you that she relies on her whole staff to help her be the best dentist for your whole family.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

As a patient, you know the bulk of your time in the dentist’s chair is spent with your hygienist. Besides cleaning your teeth, your dental hygienist does the following to help take care of your teeth:

    Perform an Initial Examination

Your skilled dental hygienist will discuss your dental and medical history. This is an important preliminary step to help the dentist be aware of any issues that are concerning you.

    X-rays of Your Teeth

They will take digital x-rays of your teeth so that Dr. Evanson can get an inside peek of your teeth and jaw.

    Administering Topical Anesthesia

If you are going to have a filling, or other procedure scheduled, your dental hygienist will help prepare you for a numbing shot by applying topical anesthesia.

Professional Cleaning to Remove Plaque, Tartar and Stains from Your Teeth

One of the most important skills provided by a dental hygienist is to clean your teeth. This isn’t something you can do for yourself by simply brushing and flossing. A dental hygienist is highly trained to use tools to ensure that plaque is removed from the gums and tooth surfaces. While cleaning your teeth, they will check:

    •   Your gums for potential gum disease
    •   For signs of oral cancer
    •   Bone levels between your teeth and gum line
    •   After your cleaning is complete, your hygienist will communicate with Dr.  Evanson regarding decay, gingivitis, oral cancer, or other concerns. Catching problems early can lower your risk of more extensive problems if left untreated.

    Apply Sealants and Other Treatments

Your dental hygienist may apply treatments, such as sealants that aid in preventing cavities or fluoride treatments.

    Dental Hygienists Educate Patients

Your dental hygienist also spends time educating you on how to care for your teeth and gums with good oral hygiene, including the proper toothbrush and toothpaste along with proper brushing and flossing methods.

    Follow-up Appointments After Initial Examination

If your dental examination uncovers other dental procedures are needed, your dental hygienist is Dr. Evanson’s right hand assistant to do the following:

    • Take dental impressions for crowns, etc.
    • Provide periodontal therapy, also known as scaling and root planing to deep clean your gums.

Document your Dental History and Treatment Plan

Your dental hygienist documents important information about your appointment with a reminder for your return visit in 6 months.
