Don’t Let Summer Be a Free for All with Your Children’s Dental Health

School’s out for the summer and it’s the perfect time to schedule your children’s bi-annual dental examination. Schedule your dental visit with Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS now, while your life is more flexible. Summer is also a good time to go to the dentist to create a focus on dental health during the summer months, which tend to be less structured than the school year.

Dental Appointments in the Summer Help You Focus on Your Children’s Dental Health

    Timing

According to the American Dental Association (ADA) you should have a dental exam every six months in order to maintain ideal oral health. This treatment every six months is designed to ensure that your teeth are clean and healthy, and to check your enamel, and check for gum disease, and to check for tooth decay or cavities in the early stages. Routine dental visits help your dentist detect oral health problems early when treatment is likely more simple and more affordable. If your child has an appointment in June, the next appointment can be calendared six months later when your children are out of school for a winter break.

Summertime Visits to the Dentist Make Sense

Appointments in the summer months are more convenient than during the school year if there are issues, such as cavities, a crown, or wisdom teeth where more than one office visit is necessary. This is especially helpful if your child needs recovery time after an extensive procedure, they are not missing crucial classroom time.

Sugar Consumption Can Be Higher in the Summer

Summer might mean more sugar than usual in your child’s diet; ice cream, soda, and popsicles, can add up to more sugar than usual. This can take a toll on your child’s oral health. It seems that everyone has the tendency to have more sweets during the summertime.  A visit to Dr. Evanson, during the summer might help you be more mindful of the tendency to go overboard with the sweets.

Everyone should limit energy drinks and sugary drinks, and drink lots of water to stay hydrated during the hot summer days. Now is the time to enjoy lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to help maintain a healthy smile. It will pay off with healthier skin and teeth!

Maintain An Oral Health Care Routine During the Summer

A dentist appointment during the summer can help keep your children establish a good routine for caring for their teeth when there are otherwise irregular schedules. School Year schedules are more strict, but the summer is more of a free-for-all.  As a result, oral care routines may go by the wayside. It’s important to maintain brushing teeth, even if it’s before a late bedtime.

Daily oral care habits should be maintained even during the summer:

    • Brush your teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes each time.
    • Daily flossing helps to clean out the spaces between the teeth that brushing misses.
    • Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash before bedtime. It can kill germs that cause bad breath and does a good job eliminating the late-night s’mores that come with summer activities.
