“Be Proud of Your Mouth” for World Oral Health Day

    World Oral Health Day

March 20 is World Oral Health Day and marks the conclusion of a year-long campaign dedicated to raising awareness throughout the world on preventing and controlling oral diseases. This world-wide effort is meant to promote good oral health for children and adults and to empower everyone to maintain a healthy mouth no matter what age they are. The official theme of the 2022 World Oral Health Day (WOHD) campaign is “Be Proud of Your Mouth”. This slogan is meant to point out that as individuals we should treat our teeth and mouth with respect.

The World Dental Federation (FDI) offers some basic guidelines to make individuals aware of ways to show respect and pride in their mouth:

Have Regular Appointments with Your Dentist

This may seem to be an obvious guideline, but statistics show that only 66 percent of adults in the United States go to the dentist on a regular basis. Regular appointments with your dentist twice a year are an important preventative measure. Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS can help you develop healthy oral habits, she can catch dental problems early, and be a vital part of your healthcare team. Certain medical conditions or pregnancy increases your need to see a dentist on a regular basis.

Brush and Floss Your Teeth Daily

A healthy smile is something to be proud of. Brushing and flossing your teeth helps prevent cavities and helps to maintain a healthy smile. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you do the following:

    • Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush.
    • Floss once a day (preferably before bed).
    • Teach your children at a young age to brush and floss so that they can grow up with the confidence and pride of having a healthy mouth.

Healthy Nutrition Will Help You Be Proud of Your Mouth and Your Overall Health

What you eat affects the health of your teeth and gums and your overall health. Sugary snacks and drinks give cavity-causing bacteria something to thrive on by producing acids that can attack your tooth enamel. Healthy foods that contain calcium, vitamins and minerals can strengthen your teeth. It’s important to learn strategies to cut sugary snacking for kids and adults alike.

Water from the Tap is the Healthiest Beverage on the Market

Tap water, especially if it’s fluoridated is the healthiest drink there is. Many people have resorted to drinking bottled water, but studies have shown that drinking water with fluoride can help prevent tooth decay by at least 20 percent. Tap water is easily accessible, it is less expensive than buying water, and since you can fill a reusable bottle it’s good for the environment.

    Evaluate Your Oral Health

The FDI developed some self-evaluation checklists that will help you evaluate your current oral hygiene habits along with some practical tips on how to improve your daily oral care routines.  With the proper care, your healthy mouth and teeth is something you can enjoy at every stage of your life. Good oral health is vital to your general health and well-being, no matter what your age.
