Be Sure to Smile at Others on World Smile Day
“World Smile Day” is commemorated on the first Friday of October every year. This day is devoted to making the effort to smile at others while spreading kindness to the people you meet. Smiling has so many benefits, but if you are embarrassed to smile because your teeth are less than perfect, make an appointment with Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS. She can improve your teeth from whitening, to straightening, implants, or other cosmetic dentistry, all of which will give you more reasons to smile!
Do You Feel Self-Conscious About Your Smile?
Your smile says so much about you, so it’s important that you do what you can to enhance your teeth and look the best you can. If your teeth aren’t glistening white or if you have missing or cracked teeth it can lower your reason to smile. You’re also apt to avoid having conversations with others or to hide your teeth while you’re speaking if you’re not proud of your teeth.
How Can You Make Sure Your Smile is Healthy on World Smile Day?
Most people would like a beautiful smile with nice white teeth. The advantages of having a beautiful smile are not just superficial. Research has shown that there are connections between poor oral health and medical conditions involving diseases of the heart, the brain, and other organs that should provide motivation to give your teeth the best care that is available.
Following are some tips for a healthy smile:
Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day for Two Minutes Each Time
- Brush your teeth using a soft bristled toothbrush. If you brush too aggressively, you can damage your tooth enamel and gums.
- Use fluoride toothpaste, which has proven effective in promoting dental health. It is considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be “one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.”
- Wait for at least 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. Certain foods, especially acidic foods, can damage tooth enamel if you brush right away. If you’ve eaten anything that is acidic, such as lemons, oranges, grapefruit, etc. can weaken tooth enamel. It’s also true if you’ve had soda and pizza. The acids in the marinara sauce and the cola have the same corrosive effect on your teeth.
- Just because you shouldn’t brush your teeth after eating acidic foods, doesn’t mean you can’t do something about the acids sitting in your mouth. You can rinse your mouth with water. This will water down the acidic residue until it’s safe to brush them without abrasing them.
Flossing is Necessary If You Want a Healthy Smile
- After brushing your teeth, it’s important to floss, which removes plaque and debris from in between the teeth that your toothbrush misses.
- After you eat, food and residue build up between your teeth and gums. Plaque and bacteria stick to your teeth resulting in cavities.
- Flossing your teeth before bedtime will help assure that the plaque and bacteria won’t stick around in your mouth overnight.
