Celebrate World Smile Day Every Day of the Year!
The first Friday of October has been named World Smile Day. This is a day devoted to smiling at others, giving others a reason to smile at you and performing random acts of kindness to those you meet. We could all use a few more smiles! Your smile is usually one of the first things people notice about you.
A Healthy Smile Equals Confidence
When you feel good about the way you look, you feel better about yourself altogether. In and of itself, smiling has a direct connection to your emotions and overall well-being. Smiling increases your confidence, and makes you feel connected and drawn to others.
Feeling Self-Conscious About Your Smile
When your smile says so much about who you are, it’s important that it looks the very best you have to offer. If you are missing one or more teeth, or have stained or cracked teeth it can lower your confidence to smile. It can also lead to mumbling or avoiding conversation altogether.
How Can You Make Sure Your Smile is Healthy?
Everyone wants a beautiful smile. The benefits of a beautiful smile are more than just cosmetic. Research has found links between poor oral health and conditions that involve the heart, the brain, and other diseases, which should provide more incentive to give your pearly whites the very best care possible.
Ways to Achieve a Healthy Smile
Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day for Two Minutes
- To brush properly, use a soft bristled toothbrush and gently brush with fluoride toothpaste. If you are too forceful you can damage your gums, and tooth enamel.
- Don’t brush your teeth immediately after eating. Brushing your teeth right after eating certain foods can damage tooth enamel. If you’ve eaten anything that is acidic, you should avoid brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes. Acidic foods, such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, etc. weaken tooth enamel. If you’ve eaten pizza and washed it down with a soda, wait. The acids from pizza sauce and the soft drinks have the same damaging effect on your teeth.
- Don’t leave the acids in your mouth for 30 minutes after you finish eating. Rinse thoroughly with water and swish it back and forth to eliminate food that may be stuck in your teeth. The water will dilute the acids until it’s safe to brush them without damaging them.
Flossing is Vital for a Healthy Smile
- Debris accumulates between your teeth and gums after you eat. Plaque and debris buildup, along with bacteria, contribute to erosion of the teeth resulting in cavities.
- Flossing removes plaque in between the teeth that a toothbrush misses.
- Floss your teeth at night before you go to bed so that plaque and bacteria won’t linger in your mouth overnight.
