Keep Your Teeth Healthy During the Holidays

The holidays are here and it seems there are goodies at every turn. The simplest thing may be that you just learn to say no, or resist temptation, even when it looks delectable.

During this holiday season, it may require some extra time and devotion to your oral health. With a little planning, you can get through the holidays with your healthy teeth intact.

Here are a few tips for keeping your mouth and teeth healthy during the holiday gatherings.

Charcuterie Boards with Cheese and Meat Are the Perfect Snack

Most hostesses offer cheese and meat trays as part of the appetizers. Cheese is a perfect snack because cheese helps neutralize the acid found in acidic beverages such as wine or soft drinks. Cheese also has calcium, which is good for your teeth. Meat is a good source of protein, which helps fight tooth decay and will keep your teeth healthy and strong.

Fresh Vegetables and Fruit are Good for Healthy Teeth

Satisfy your sweet tooth by filling your plate with fruit and veggies instead. Olives, carrots, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower are satisfying and full of flavor. Moderate the type of snacks you will eat in order to socialize without overeating.

    Eat a Single Treat

It’s not reasonable to think you can get through a party without eating any sweets. Select one treat, then rinse your mouth. A single dessert will expose your teeth to a small amount of sugar, but if you rinse and then brush if possible, this will reduce the risk of tooth decay.

     Avoid Sticky Candy

Sticky candy is not good for your teeth as it hides in the crevices increasing the chance for cavities. Caramels have a reputation for pulling out a filling, bridge, or braces.

    Chew Sugarless Gum

A good alternative to brushing your teeth while at a holiday party is chewing some sugarless gum. Studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following a snack or meal can help prevent tooth decay. Chewing sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, which washes away debris in your teeth. It also neutralizes acids in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances in the mouth. Increased saliva also strengthens tooth enamel, will also keep your breath fresh and occupy you so you are less likely to eat any more food.

Stick to Your Oral Care Routine at Home

The holidays can interrupt your routine at home and work.  One of the most important routines is to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Flossing once a day and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash will help keep your teeth healthy. If you eat between meals, be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush your teeth if possible.
