Love Your Teeth During the Month of February

February typically represents the month of love; love for your classmates at school, love for your friends and family, and love for your significant other. How about showing love for your teeth, especially loose or missing teeth? Your teeth are important in so many ways!  Teeth allow you to eat and enjoy food, they aid in digestion, and healthy teeth will not only help you look great, but they will help in your overall health. Dedicate some time during this month of February and love your teeth!

Teeth Play a Major Role in Various Aspects of Your Life

    Visual Appearance

Everyone notices your teeth. If they are white or stained, straight or crooked, or if you have missing teeth, others notice your mouth and all aspects of it. A beautiful smile says a lot about how you care for your oral health.

If you have lost a permanent tooth, it can feel devastating. American culture values a healthy-looking smile. If you are missing teeth, smiling can be shameful and may cause you to avoid social interactions due to embarrassment.

    Eating and Digestion

Teeth are the first stage in eating and digestion. If you are missing a tooth can really impede your ability to bite and chew normally. Missing teeth can decrease saliva production, which leads to a partial breakdown of starches and nutrients making it more difficult to break down food into easily consumed bits. Missing teeth also make it difficult to form your words and makes your speech sound slurred, lisped, or even whistled.

The Loss of a Permanent Tooth Leads to Other Problems

Losing a permanent tooth makes you more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss, therefore it is important to have restorative dentistry. Restorative dentistry means restoring your teeth to their natural appearance and function.

    • Restoring a tooth can save it from extraction, and the difficulties accompanying a missing tooth.
    • Restorative treatment protects the tooth that is being restored and the surrounding teeth also benefit.

    Tooth Restoration Options

    1. Fillings – Fillings are a common treatment when it comes to dealing with tooth decay. Composite resins are the same color as natural teeth, making them blend in with the color of your teeth.
    1. Crowns – Crowns are a dental prosthetic that restores the appearance of the tooth, typically after a root canal has been performed on a tooth,
    1. Dental Bridges – A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. A bridge is an affordable option when replacing multiple teeth.
    1. Root Canal Therapy – 15 million teeth are saved each year by root canal therapy saving the natural tooth has many advantages.
    2. Dental Implants – Implants are the best way to replace missing teeth. Implants are just like natural teeth, and even stronger than a natural tooth.
