Why Are My Child’s Baby Teeth Crooked?
Any parent will tell you that teething babies are not happy campers. It’s usually a painful process for parent and child. Baby teeth grow in to save a spot for permanent teeth which will grow in their place as they get older. Witnessing this painful process can have added stress if your child’s teeth are crooked, misaligned or gapped. Why does this happen?
- One of the most common reasons that baby teeth are crooked is due to family traits. Everyone has a different sized mouth and teeth. When you put the combinations of two parents together, your child may experience crowded, misaligned teeth.
- Habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting can affect your child’s bite. Tongue thrusting happens when the tongue presses too far into the mouth, pushing baby teeth forward. This causes the teeth to have an “open bite” where the front teeth don’t come together when the mouth is closed. Thumb sucking can alter the shape of the jaw, causing an overbite or an underbite, leading to future problems.
- Occasionally, your child may have an extra tooth which affects only one percent of the population. This can cause problems with the other teeth. This is another reason to make an appointment with Dr. Evanson. The common solution for this type of problem is tooth extraction.
Should I Be Concerned if My Child’s Baby Teeth Are Crooked?
There are lots of reasons that your child’s baby teeth are crooked. However, keep in mind that as your child grows, their mouth and jaw will also grow and change. This is especially true in the first 3 to 6 years of life. This growth will change the position of their baby teeth, and they may straighten and will likely grow straight even if some of their baby teeth are crowded or crooked.
With regular six-month appointments, as recommended by the ADA, Dr. Evanson will keep track of your child’s dental health and oral health habits at home to make sure of proper and steady progress towards a healthy future.
