Now is the Time to Schedule Teeth Cleaning Appointments for the Coming Year!

Now is the Time to Schedule Teeth Cleaning Appointments for the Coming Year!

Pull out your new calendar for 2024 and set up your dental appointments for regular cleanings with Dr. Angela Evanson, DDS. If you schedule cleanings and check-ups at specific times, you can keep tooth decay on then run. Tooth decay develops in a predictable pattern, and even though you are diligent at brushing and flossing, plaque can develop in hard-to-reach places. Once plaque converts into tartar, it can only be removed with tools available to dental professionals.

A new year is on the horizon and it’s time to make New Year’s Resolutions for 2024. Make sure to include dental resolutions in your list of improvements for next year, including regularly scheduled appointments every 6 months.

Set a New Year’s Resolution to Improve Your Oral Health in the Coming Year

Good oral hygiene at home, and regular dental check-ups are the best way to improve your oral health. Proper brushing and flossing will help prevent plaque from building up in your mouth. Gingivitis, a gum infection caused by bacteria at the gum line, can lead to periodontitis, a more serious gum infection and potentially cause tooth and dangerous health risks.

Good Self Care and Oral Hygiene at Home Affects Your Overall Health

Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body. Your mouth functions as a vantage point for dental problems such as gum infection or systemic diseases like diabetes.

Research has shown that individuals with periodontal disease are at a greater risk of having heart disease due to the increase of inflammation. Persistent inflammation affects many parts of the body, including artery inflammation.

There are other health problems associated with poor oral hygiene. Keeping your mouth clean can help prevent the risks of health complications. Some of the risks include:

    • Oral cancer
    • Bacterial pneumonia can be caused by gum disease where the bacteria spreads to the lungs where bacterial pneumonia will develop.
    • Inflammation of the inside lining of the heart chambers and heart valves (Endocarditis)
    • Pregnancy complications and low birth weight
    • Sepsis from a dental infection can spread to other parts of the body and lead to sepsis.

It is also best to schedule regular dental checkups every six months to ensure good oral health and hygiene.

    Good Oral Hygiene is Essential

    • Rinse your mouth with water after meals and chew sugarless gum.
    • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste and use a soft toothbrush to avoid damage to your gums.
    • Floss daily – preferably at bedtime after you’ve brushed your teeth.
    • Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash to kill germs that brushing and flossing may miss.
    • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
    • Eat a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and proteins. Limit sugary snacks, soft drinks and acidic foods and drinks.
    • Avoid tobacco of all kinds.
    • Use a night guard if you grind your teeth during your sleep.
    • Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings to keep cavities at bay.

Why Schedule Dental Appointments Every 6 Months?

Dental appointments are ideally set at specific intervals because tooth decay develops in a predictable pattern. Even if you’re the most diligent at brushing and flossing, plaque begins to form in your mouth within 24 to 48 hours after a professional cleaning. Once plaque changes into tartar, only dental professionals with their tools can remove it.

Keep brushing and flossing and contact us online or call (720) 409-0008 to schedule those cleanings with Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS before the year gets going!

The best to you in this new year of good oral health! Schedule your check-ups today!
