School’s Almost Out – It’s Time to Make Your Summer Dental Appointments

School’s almost out for the summer and now is the time to make a dental appointment with Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS! Summertime is the perfect time to have your bi-annual dental examination, when school schedules don’t have to be factored in. Summertime appointments are especially handy if there are dental issues where more than one office visit might be necessary.

Scheduling a dentist appointment for your children at the beginning of the summer offers great benefits for their dental health over the next three months.

    Timing is Everything

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you have a dental exam every six months in order to maintain your ideal oral health. This incremental course of treatment ensures that your teeth are clean and healthy, and provides a reasonable timeline to check for gum disease, enamel wear, and of course to catch any tooth decay or cavities early. Regular dental visits are important because they can help detect dental health problems early on when treatment is likely to be simpler and more affordable. If you schedule an appointment in June, the next appointment can be calendared right before Christmas, which provides another break from school.

A Visit to the Dentist Can Help Curb Cavity-Prone Sugar Consumption During the Summer

A visit to the dentist in the summer can help protect your children’s teeth against the onslaught of sugary treats such as soda, ice cream and popsicles consumed during the summer. For kids that could mean applying dental sealants to keep the grooves of their molars safe from decay. For adults, a good cleaning removes the plaque buildup which worsens with increased sugar consumption.

Everyone, whether adult or child, should limit sugary drinks, and drink plenty of water or milk. Avoiding soft drinks and energy drinks may be difficult to do, but the pay-off is when you have healthier teeth and a smaller waistline. Make sure to provide plenty of fresh fruits to satisfy your sweet tooth and eat an abundance of vegetables, lean meats and dairy products to maintain a healthy smile year-round.

Maintain an Oral Health Routine During the Summer

An appointment with Dr. Evanson during the summer can help protect your children’s teeth against irregular summertime schedules. Bedtime during the summer is usually not as strict as it is during the school year, and some of the teeth brushing routines may go by the wayside. Resist the temptation to have your children skip brushing before a late bedtime, and don’t let brushing slide when they sleep in late the next morning.

Daily Oral Maintenance Doesn’t Get the Summer Off

    • The most important oral health habit is to brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes each time.
    • Daily flossing helps to clean out the tight spaces between the teeth.
    • Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash before bedtime. It can kill germs that cause bad breath and does a good job diminishing the cotton candy, watermelon or late-night milkshake that comes with summer activities.
