The Importance of Oral Hygiene
One of the great things about dental exams is obtaining the peace of mind that your oral health is where it needs to be. Our friendly staff, along with Dr. Evanson, can educate you on where you need to make improvements in your home oral care. We can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong by having you address areas that are showing neglect. Empowered with the information you need, you can leave our office ready to win the battle against tooth decay!
At-home oral health care can never achieve the depth of teeth cleaning you will receive in a dental office because you lack the tools, perspective and experience your dental provider and team possess. The toothbrush is a priceless tool, but it just doesn’t cut it against stubborn plaque build up.
In-office dental cleanings protect sensitive gum tissues from bacteria that can cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. Dental polishings are also not easily obtained outside of a dental office and help you achieve that sparkling smile you desire.
Dental cleanings also offer fluoride treatments to keep your tooth enamel strong and ready to withstand bacteria that will attempt to break it down.
Kids and Dental Sealants
Dental exams also give Dr. Evanson the opportunity to apply sealants to your child’s teeth if they don’t have them already (and to assess the health of the sealants that are in place).
Dental sealants provide a bacteria barrier to lock-out cavities. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), “sealant placement in children and adolescents has shown a reduction of cavities’ incidence [by] 86 percent after one year and 58 percent after four years.” Sealants came into play because the fact remains that toothbrush bristles just can’t reach into all the grooves of your teeth.
Deep depressions and grooves in teeth entrap food particles and permit unwanted plaque build up. Sugars from the food you eat produce acids that work to eat away the tooth enamel of your teeth. Without dental sealants in place, repeated bacterial attacks cause the enamel to erode which precipitates the formation of cavities on the tooth surface.
