Should I Pull My Tooth or Have it Restored?

Should I Pull My Tooth or Have it Restored?

In the past, a tooth that was infected or diseased was typically pulled. Although pulling a tooth may stop the pain you’re experiencing, it might not be the best solution. Dr. Angela S. Evanson, DDS provides a variety of methods of tooth restoration to either replace missing teeth or repair missing parts of the tooth including fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, veneers and partial or full dentures.

    Tooth Restoration

The structure of the tooth can be missing due to decay, deterioration of a previous filling or fracture of a tooth. Whatever the cause of your tooth breakdown, it will need to be repaired or replaced.

Dentistry restoration to their natural appearance and function, can save your tooth from extraction, and the complications associated when there is a tooth missing. Restorative treatment protects the restored tooth and the surrounding teeth.

    What Are My Options?

Dr. Evanson is skilled in various methods of tooth restoration. Make an appointment so she can decide what your best options are for repairing your damaged tooth. Some of the restoration methods include:

    Fillings

If you have a tooth that needs a filling, Dr. Evanson will remove the decay, clean the tooth and fill the  cavity with custom made composite resins that are the color of your natural teeth. This is a major improvement over the old school silver fillings that contain 50 percent mercury. The metal in a silver filling expands and contracts over the years, and it can split, leaving the tooth vulnerable to additional decay. Tooth colored composite resin fillings are unequaled in so many ways,  and aesthetically pleasing since they are NOT glaringly silver inside your mouth.

    Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is different from filling a cavity. The tooth decay at this point has spread to your nerves, blood vessels and the center of the tooth. At this point,  Dr. Evanson will drill a hole in the wall of your tooth and extract the infected tissue, nerves and pulp. After the decay is extracted from your tooth, the canals of the tooth are cleaned and flushed with a sterilizing solution prior to being sealed. In two or so weeks, the root canal will be covered by a permanent dental crown to protect the enamel. Taking good care of your entire mouth with regular flossing and brushing is the key to a long lasting crown.

    Dental Implants

If you’re missing a tooth, there can be a sense of shame associated with that tooth loss.Likely the best solution to a missing tooth is likely a dental implant. Implants are very effective in isolating a problem that belongs to one tooth, and doesn’t involve additional surrounding teeth.

    • Implants are actually stronger than natural teeth.
    • You need to have healthy gums and adequate bone structure to support an implant.
    • As with any restoration methods,  you must be committed to superior oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

If you are missing one or more teeth, contact Dr. Evanson’s office for a free consultation. She will evaluate your ability to have an  implant process and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.
