World Oral Health Day – A Reason to Celebrate!
World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is the final event of a year-long campaign dedicated to raising awareness throughout the world regarding the prevention and management of oral diseases. This international celebration is designed to empower individuals to maintain a healthy mouth at all ages and to empower good oral health for everyone. The official theme this year is “Be Proud of Your Mouth”, in other words, value and take care of your mouth.
The World Dental Federation (FDI), is made up of one million dentists worldwide, and is the major organization of WOHD. This group serves as a united voice for dentistry that works to develop educational programs and health policies that promote good oral health practices throughout the world. This campaign works to motivate individuals to take action to protect their oral health.
Basic guidelines as outlined by the FDI:
Brush and Floss Your Teeth Daily
This daily oral practice of brushing and flossing your teeth will help prevent cavities and maintain a healthy white smile. The basic guidelines include brushing for two minutes, twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush while using fluoride toothpaste. This is followed by flossing once a day at bedtime. If your children learn this habit, they are on their way to a lifelong pattern that will help them throughout their lives. Teaching your children how to properly brush and floss their teeth will benefit them now and in the future.
Healthy Nutrition Adds to Good Oral Health
The foods and drinks that you consume affect your teeth and gums and your overall health. Sugar from sweets and carbohydrates give the cavity-causing bacteria something to chew on. At this point, acids are produced that can attack your enamel and weaken your teeth. Healthy foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, along with foods that contain calcium and protein can strengthen your teeth.
Tap Water is the Best Drink for Your Oral Health
Water from the tap, especially if it’s fluoridated, is the best drink for your oral and physical health. Bottled water is readily available, but it rarely has fluoride in it. Studies have shown that drinking water with fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by at least 25 percent. Tap water is usually fluoridated, less costly than buying bottled water, and the environment benefits by keeping plastic bottles out of the landfill. With proper care, good dental health is something you can enjoy at every stage of your lifetime. No matter what your age, good oral health is vital to your general health and well-being.
Regular Dental Appointments
Only 65.7 percent of adults in the United States go to the dentist on a routine basis. Regular appointments at your dentist every six months is a valued defensive plan that will help your oral health stay on track. Frequent visits at the dentist will help you discover any dental problems early in the process. It will also help you develop healthy habits, and is a vital part of your health care team, especially if you have a medical condition or are pregnant.
